Although the ISO 14001 standard sets out the criteria for an environmental management system and can be certified to it, nevertheless it does not set requirements for environmental performance, but maps out a framework that a company or organization can adapt and follow to set up an effective environmental management system. It can be used by any organization regardless of its activity or sector.
However additional more specific provisions can be added by incorporating other standards such as:
- TMSA 3 – Element 10
- USA EPA VGP
- USCG ECP, in line with the specific provisions set within the ECP
Development of an integrated Environmental Management System to satisfy ISO 14001:2004 standards whilst meeting other standards such as full compliance with USA Environmental Compliance Program (ECP).
If it is developed as per ECP it can include:

- Specific Responsibilities and accountabilities.
- Incentive programs.
- Potential legal ramifications.
- Evaluation programs relating the compliance of ECP/EMS.
- Reporting progress for contractors.
- System for tracking employee questions about interpretation of Environmental requirements.
- Enhanced Employee training program.
- Enhanced environmental program with objectives and targets for each sub unit with emphasis on E/R operations.
- Program for controlling and minimising waste releases.
- ECP/EMS internal & third party audits.
- Monitoring of new regulations.
- Any other provisions documented within the ECP
- Office preparation & representation during certification audits.
- Internal / Third Party audits On-board.
- Preparation & representation during on board external audits.
- Office & On-board training seminars.
- Environmental requirements training.
- ECP Compliance training ashore and on board.
- ISM & ISO Internal Audit Course.
